The "We Value Research Project" is a collaborative initiative between the Asian Institute for Advanced Research (AIFAR) and the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Hong Kong. This project was guided by the understanding that the success of large infrastructure projects cannot be ensured by environmental assessments alone. A comprehensive understanding of local values is essential to secure the ownership and support of the communities involved.
To achieve this, the project engaged in extensive fieldwork in Nepal, including over 20 workshops with diverse identity groups in Panchakanya Rural Municipality, Nuwakot District. In addition, key informant interviews were conducted with politicians, scholars, and other stakeholders across various regions of the country.
Researchers from Hong Kong, mainland China, and Nepal collaborated closely, bringing a wide range of perspectives and expertise to the study. By emphasizing the importance of local values, the project aimed to foster deeper community engagement and contribute to the long-term success and sustainability of infrastructure initiatives. This research not only enhanced the understanding of local social dynamics but also reinforced the importance of integrating cultural and social considerations into development planning.
